Health Benefits of Negative Ions

Numerous studies have shown there are significant health benefits associated with the use of negative ions, and that a negative ion depleted atmosphere can adversely affect health. Negative ions, nature's air purifiers, are produced by sunlight, lightning, wave actions and waterfalls. This is why the air seems cleaner at the beach or near moving bodies of water. Move into the city, where the production of negative ions has been disrupted by human progress, and the air is heavy with particles that cannot be naturally removed, which can mean trouble for people with respiratory problems. Using a negative ion air purifier in the home and office can be helpful in preventing asthma attacks and allergy symptoms by removing dust, cigarette smoke and other pollutants from the air.

A negative ion air purifier can help alleviate the breathing problems associated with asthmatic allergies, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and other respiratory problems. Almost all particles in the air have a positive ion charge. These particles contain dust, bacteria, viruses, allergens and other pollutants that, when breathed in, can cause asthma attacks, allergies and illness. Negative ions attach to floating particles, at which point they become too heavy to remain suspended in the air and fall to the surface below, where they can be removed with normal cleaning such as dusting and vacuuming.

In addition to making the air safer and easier to breathe, there are numerous other health benefits of using a negative ion air purifier. Studies have shown that ionizing the air with air purifiers can be effective in the treatment of depression, seasonal affective disorder, migraine headaches and fatigue, and have proven effective in reducing the incidence of infections in burn patients. Interestingly, studies have also shown that infants do not cry as much or as often when a negative ion air purifier is being used.
